On the Road with Depeche Mode

On her tour with synth giants Depeche Mode, EMA chats with Martin Gore and premieres Dave Gahan playing over her track “Blood & Chalk.”

Every Mystery Language episode is special, but this one is slightly more than most. For a brief stint in late January and early February, EMA opened for Depeche Mode on several dates of the band’s European tour, and turned her experience into a tour diary and audio collage. These two hours feature off-the-cuff backstage interviews, sound samples from a rap app, Ramona Falls’ Brent Knopf demonstrating why the chord progression from “Shake the Disease” is so evocative and much, much more. By the time you finish listening, you’ll have post-tour depression too.

Un gruppo leggendario che non ha più nulla da dimostrare. Nonostante questo, i Depeche Mode visti prima negli stadi e poi nei palazzetti sono ancora una band che ha una voglia infinita di suonare dal vivo e di esibirsi. Dave Gahan and artist Marilyn Minter have collaborated on a special artwork to support Planned Parenthood. Earlier this year, Gahan approached Minter to create an exclusive work, which will be released for the benefit of the non-profit and will be auctioned at the first annual Planned Parenthood Spring Gala, on May 1st, 2018, at Spring Studios in New York City, with all proceeds to benefit the organization.
The automobile features a hand painted body depicting steamy lips. The one of a kind car, donated by Gahan from his own personal collection, will be sold through Paddle 8 with an opening bid of $180,000. More details on the auction can be found here:

The car is produced with an advanced technique called "hydro dipping", where a photographic image is transferred as an ink film to the hood of the car, then clear-coated to be solidly incorporated into the car's finish. The body of the car is finished in a matching color. The resulting painting on the car is as sturdy as any other automotive coating.
A passionate advocate for women and reproductive justice, Marilyn's paintings, photographs, and videos examine the relationship between the body and cultural anxieties related to sexuality and desire. She is one of Planned Parenthood's most visible and vocal supporters, raising millions of dollars and awareness for the cause. Ms. Minter was honored with the Woman of Valor Award by the organization in 2016 because of her significant contributions, including creating a print edition with Miley Cyrus in 2016. A celebrated and fearless activist, Marilyn's voice stands out as the threats to reproductive right escalate. This month her work can be seen at a solo show at Regen Projects in Los Angeles, opening May 19.

DEF LEPPARD Spotify Singles w/ DEPECHE MODE's Personal Jesus Out Now

Def Leppard's Spotify Singles session has been released today on the streaming service and is available to listen to.

The Depeche Mode cover of 'Personal Jesus' has been playing during the pre-show PA music as the 30 minute countdown clock ends.

This new show intro was premiered at the start of the US tour in Hartford, CT on 21st May.

This song along with 'Hysteria' was recorded on 16th May at Spotify's studios in New York. Both are now available.

This release coincides with the 40th anniversary of Def Leppard's first public live concert in 1978 at Westfield School in Sheffield.

Joe commented on the session soon afterwards in an interview with Eddie Trunk.

This Def Leppard version stays true to the electronic sound of the original with thumping bass and programmed electronic drums. Like the cover of 'Rock On' it has been Leppardised with rocking guitars added. Especially in the outro section.

The original was released in August 1989 and eventually included on their classic 1990 album 'Violator'. It reached Number 13 in the UK and Number 28 in the USA.

It has also been covered in the past by Marilyn Manson and Johnny Cash.

The studio version of the cover lasts for 3:56. The version used in the show intro lasts for around 4:44 (listen to that via the video playlist link).

Hear Why Def Leppard Loves Depeche Mode’s ‘Personal Jesus’

Guitarist Phil Collen explains surprising connection between British Eighties bands on Spotify’s Under Cover podcast

For many of us, 2018 was the Year of the Leppard. The hard rock band headlined and sold out Madison Square Garden for the first time, got nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and at long last, made their entire catalog available to stream.

Def Leppard marked the occasion at Spotify Studios by recording a cover of one of their live show warmup songs, “Personal Jesus,” by Depeche Mode. It felt like a surprising choice, but the connection between the two disparate Eighties bands is much deeper, guitarist Phil Collen explains on Spotify’s Under Cover podcast.

What makes “Personal Jesus” a great song is its memorable groove and melody, Collen said. The production reminded him of Leppard’s hit “Love Bites,” because like “Jesus,” it was recorded like a dance track, by isolating each part and piecing them together in the mixing process. So when the song became a Number One hit (Def Leppard’s only song to go Number One), there was a bit of scrambling to figure out how to play it live. “It was a real struggle playing guitar and singing [on that song],” Collen said, “but we finally got it.”

Def Leppard’s rendition of “Personal Jesus” is bit grittier than the original, largely due to Collen’s bluesy electric guitar. He plays a Jackson PC 1 with a built in sustainer that gives it that wobbly, rippling sound that’s recognizable on albums like Hysteria. The effect was inspired by Brian May of Queen, he said. For “Jesus,” after scratching a few sound experiments, Collen said landed on notes that, in the end, were “cool, current and nasty.”

“Depeche Mode [started out] really poppy like a lot of bands that disappeared, then all of a sudden they started doing things like ‘Personal Jesus’ – and it was like ‘woah’ … It has an element of cool that was different from the earlier Depeche Mode stuff,” Collen said. “I found it really inspiring how this article that said Depeche Mode sold out more than Bieber or Taylor Swift,” Collen said. “We [felt] a tear of pride and joy for them – the fact that they carried on, never stopped … and it’s sort of the way we see ourselves.”
