OLI Teams Up w/ Dave Gahan on New Alt-Rock Duet ‘Does That Hurt?’

Nonconformist singer-songwriter, OLI’s new single, ‘Does That Hurt?’, sees the artist team up with Depeche Mode lead singer, Dave Gahan, leading to her first dive from pop into alternative rock.

Bridging the gap between OLI’s tender vocal line leading soft percussion taps and guitar strums, Gahan’s introduction partway through diverts the song with his heavier sound, otherworldly backing vocals, and occasional riff outbursts. “It’s my first time leaning into the rock genre,” says the 25-year-old Londoner, who brings in her talents from last year’s singles with her unique songwriting style and diverse tastes.

“I wanted it to seem like two people who just couldn’t see eye to eye. They both aren’t really listening to each other, they’re stuck. It’s almost like they are interrupting each other throughout the song,” says OLI, who was introduced to Gahan by hit-making producer, Benny D, who also helped mix the track.

Writing her first song at age seven, OLI’s background in a musical family meant she always thought she’d be a singer, taking influences from artists like Sade and Dion Warwick, to bands like Stereophonics and Supergrass. With ‘Does That Hurt?’ seeing her branch out to a new audience, there’s much more to come from this artist.

London singer OLI drops new alt-rock Dave Gahan collaboration ‘Does That Hurt?’

London-based singer-songwriter OLI’s latest single, Does That Hurt?, is a star-studded collaboration with Depeche Mode’s lead singer Dave Gahan that takes the artist from pop to alt-rock.

An eclectic mix of guitars and soft percussion, the song sees OLI’s tender vocals take point leading a chorus of instruments before the track is interrupted by Gahan’s rock and roll snarl. A darker alternative sound that sees riffing outbursts, the two performers set the scene as an irresistible push and pull that follows the rising artist’s penchant for unique songwriting and expansive musical stories.

Taking inspiration for her sound from a diverse list of artists from Sade and Dion Warwick to Supergrass, OLI had something specific in mind for Does That Hurt?: “I wanted it to seem like two people who just couldn’t see eye to eye. They both aren’t really listening to each other, they’re stuck. It’s almost like they are interrupting each other throughout the song.”

Growing up in a musical family, OLI always knew she’d end up as an artist has had plenty of time to create her distinctive sound. Having been introduced to Gahan by hitmaking producer Benny D, the new single is a unique blend of two musical worlds.

OLI collaborates with Depeche Mode’s Dave Gahan on new single ‘Does That Hurt?’

London-based singer songwriter OLI has collaborated with none other than Dave Gahan of Depeche Mode to create a stunning new track. Their jointly written song ‘Does That Hurt?’ is out now.
A brooding song, which sees the pair take on the roles of two characters who just can’t see eye to eye, the immersive soundscape hears Dave Gahan’s instantly recognisable vocals meet the beautiful, delicate voice of OLI. Sounding as if the two performances are battling to take centre stage, the grand production makes for a really stunning display, and an interesting listen.
Speaking of the song’s inspirations, OLI said: “I wanted it to seem like two people who just couldn’t see eye to eye. They both aren’t really listening to each other, they’re stuck. It’s almost like they are interrupting each other throughout the song.”
She continues: “A lot of the song was already finished when I first heard it, so I wanted to make it mesh well with what I would sing. I think I wrote 5 or 6 versions of lyrics because I was so nervous to make it work… It’s a special song to me, it’s my first time leaning into the rock genre, and I really love it.”
Dave Gahan and OLI met through the legendary producer Benny D (Kylie, Robbie Williams, Depeche Mode) who has worked on all of OLI’s releases to date. Diverging from pop music to a more alternative and instrument driven sound, the 25 year old Londoner found collaboration with Dave Gahan to bring in the darker, more intense male vocals, elevating the track with an irresistible push and pull between the two performers. OLI said: “Honestly, I feel pretty lucky that I was even given the opportunity to have my voice and lyrics on a song with such an iconic artist.”

NEW NOISE: OLI

14 March 2022

The London-based artist departs from her ethereal soundscape for her new rock-inspired single.

After her previous single “Cry”, it has been no secret that OLI is not afraid to explore the dark — and her latest release proves no different. Fusing sin-soaked beats with ecstasy-laced melodies and sugar sweet vocals, OLI collaborates with Depeche Mode’s Dave Gahan to produce the enigmatic track, “Does That Hurt?” While the song begins with a Western-style instrumental, OLI introduces her intimate lyricism, which plunges into suspense as the track reaches Dave’s first verse. Soon enough, ‘Does That Hurt?” transforms into a tug-of-war between OLI and Dave, whose haunting soundscape gnaws and shakes at OLI’s symphonic production.

On the making of the track, OLI explains, “I wanted it to seem like two people who just couldn’t see eye to eye. They both aren’t really listening to each other, they’re stuck. It’s almost like they are interrupting each other throughout the song. A lot of the song was already finished when I first heard it, so I wanted to make it mesh well with what I would sing. I think I wrote 5 or 6 versions of lyrics because I was so nervous to make it work… It’s a special song to me, it’s my first time leaning into the rock genre, and I really love it.”

Marking a clean departure from her dreamy pop tendencies, “Does That Hurt?” rubs grit into OLI’s ethereal sound, and leaves all of her fans guessing as to what will come next. Before this, we spoke with OLI all about her music, her inspirations, and what she’s most excited for next.

Hey OLI how are you? How has this past year been for you?
I feel very lucky to say that I’ve had a really great year despite the craziness of covid. My family and I have grown closer, we would drink and make up stupid songs together in lockdown. I think having those moments made my music better.

With everything that happened in during the pandemic, was your creativity affected?
The fact I’ve been able to be around my family more has made me a lot more creative. I’ve written songs with my dad for the first time which is something we’ve been trying to do for years. He’s a great guitarist.

How did you first get into music, what sparked the interest?
My parents are musical, so I was always singing and writing. I’ve honestly never really thought about another job or future besides music. I am very lucky!

Where are you from? Do you think your hometown impacted your sound in any way?
I was born in the US but London has been my home for most of my life. The music community is almost unbelievable in London, everyone knows each other or is a friend of a friend. That creates an extremely supportive environment.

And you’ve just dropped your new single, talk us through your mindset going into it?
I really love Americana style production. Benny had been working on a project with Dave Gahan and played me the demo. It was so moody and cool. I think I wrote 5 versions of lyrics because nothing ever felt good enough…I knew this was a special opportunity and I just didn’t want to waste it. I’m glad we took our time though; I am so proud of the final song!

And you say it’s a special song to you, why is this?
It took well over 5 years to complete and features one of the most iconic vocalists of all time. Having a song with Dave Gahan has been the absolute top moment of my music career now and (honestly) forever.

What do you hope people take away from your music?
I just want people to escape a little. Even daydream to my music. That would be very cool.

Who would you say are your inspirations?
Sade, Melanie Martinez, Stereophonics.

What are you most excited for? What’s next?
I have a couple singles coming out this year, one of my favourites is ‘Float’. But I am also hoping to collaborate with other artists, I don’t think I realised how much I love it.

OLI REVEALS STUNNING COLLABORATION WITH DEPECHE MODE’S DAVE GAHAN

Nonconformist singer-songwriter OLI will release her latest single "Does That Hurt?" on CD on the 18th March, leaning into a heavier alt-rock sound in collaboration with Depeche Mode’s Dave Gahan. After releasing a series of lush soundscape singles last year, this new track continues her trend of unique song writing and expansive musical stories.

Featuring an eclectic mix of sounds, "Does That Hurt?" sees OLI’s tender voice leading a chorus of guitars and gentle percussion taps, before the song shifts as the contrasting vocals from Gahan are introduced, complimented by other-worldly backing sounds and the occasional riff outburst.

Diverging from pop music to a more alternative and instrument driven sound, the 25 year old Londoner found collaboration with Dave Gahan to bring in the darker, more intense male vocals, elevating the track with an irresistible push and pull between the two performers. OLI said: “Honestly, I feel pretty lucky that I was even given the opportunity to have my voice and lyrics on a song with such an iconic artist.” Having been introduced to Dave by hit-making producer Benny D, the mix of her beautifully controlled verses alongside his rock and roll snarl is a stunning display.

Growing up in a musical family and writing her first song when she was only 7, OLI always knew she was going to become an artist. Soaking up influences ranging from Sade and Dionne Warwick to bands like Stereophonics and Supergrass, OLI’s own desire to create distinctive art comes from her diverse list of inspirations.
