Warum sich Dave Gahan für einen Hochstapler hält

Der Depeche-Mode-Sänger Dave Gahan hat mal wieder ein eigenes Album gemacht: Auf „Imposter“, das am 12. November erscheint, interpretiert er mit den Soulsavers ausgewählte Songs anderer Stars. In unserer Dezember-Ausgabe verrät der 59-Jährige, warum ihm Alleingänge so gut tun und warum er das Gefühl hat, ein Hochstapler zu sein.

Fremd und einsam fühlte sich Dave Gahan als Frontmann von Depeche Mode im Popzirkus oft, verlor sich in Drogen und dabei mehrmals fast sein Leben. Heute ist er 59-Jährige ein liebender Patchwork-Familienvater in dritter Ehe und genießt die Zurückgezogenheit zwischen den noch immer gigantischen Erfolgsauftritten seiner Band. In ihr fühlt er sich heute glücklich und zugleich auch in gewisser Weise eingesperrt.

„Mit Depeche Mode habe ich 2017 und 2018 Wahnsinnsshows abgeliefert. Wir waren auf dem Höhepunkt unseres Schaffens. Und wir sind noch nicht fertig. Ich denke, es wird weitergehen. Auch wenn Depeche Mode ein bisschen wie ein Zoogehege ist“, sagte der 59-Jährige im Interview mit unserem Magazin Magazin. „Wir sind Gefangene an einem sehr komfortablen Ort, an den wir immer wieder freiwillig zurückkehren. Wir haben uns selbst eingesperrt“, sagt der Brite über die seit 31 Jahren bestehende Band, die mit mehr als 100 Millionen verkauften Platten zu den weltweit erfolgreichsten Popgruppen zählt. „Doch wir wissen, wo die Löcher im Zaun sind, aus denen wir manchmal ausbüxen. Dann laufen wir irgendwo anders herum und schauen uns an, was die Welt sonst noch so zu bieten hat“, sagt Gahan.

Auf seinen jüngsten Ausbruch, dem neuen Album „Imposter“ (Deutsch: „Hochstapler“) vorstellte, das er Ende 2019 mit den Soulsavers fertiggestellt hatte, begibt er sich aber ohne Band. Darauf interpretiert er ausgewählte Songs von Stars wie Bob Dylan und Neil Young.

Das Gefühl, ein Hochstapler zu sein, habe er „früher ständig“, gehabt, bekennt Gahan in dem Interview. „Besonders zu Beginn mit Depeche Mode. Aber auch schon als Kind. Mein ganzes Leben lang quälte mich das Gefühl, nirgendwo dazuzugehören, speziell nicht dahin, wo ich gerade war“, so der Sänger. Heute gehe er mit diesem Gefühl anders um: „Ich genieße es heute, in meiner Welt zu sein. Sei es auf meinen Spaziergängen oder beim Musikhören.“ Daher sei ihm auch der Pandemie-bedingte Lockdown, den er größtenteils in seinem Haus auf Long Island mit der Familie verbracht habe, nicht schwer gefallen: „Ich muss ehrlich sein: Mir gefällt es, mich zu verstecken. Ich bin nicht ungesellig, aber allein zu sein stört mich auch nicht. So war ich immer schon.“

David Gahan & Soulsavers' latest LP, Imposter, came together so smoothly that Gahan wondered at times when the other proverbial shoe was going to drop.

Gahan and nine other musicians curated songs for the record, arranged and recorded them all at Rick Rubin's Shangri-La recording studio in southern California in November of 2019.

The album was mixed and mastered a few months later in London when the other shoe — the COVID pandemic — did indeed come crashing down.

"[Shangri-La] itself was like this perfect setting to do this [album]," Gahan tells Q104.3's Out of the Box with Jonathan Clarke. "It's one of those situations where you just kept pinching yourself like, 'When's this going to go south?' And it just didn't.

"Each day we would get another song done, another song done. The chemistry was just there between us. Then, we went off to London, Rich [Machin] and I, in January [2020] with Marta Salogni to mix the record. After that, I spent a little bit of time with my mum over there, came back to New York and then all hell broke loose. That was it."

Gahan & Soulsavers sat on the fully-completed album for almost a full two years until it was released on November 12.

Imposter finds Gahan & Soulsavers tackle 12 splendidly reimagined versions of classic songs by the likes of Cat Power, Charlie Chaplin, Bob Dylan, Mark Lanegan, Neil Young and many others.

Gahan and co. talked at length about how to ensure that the album wouldn't sound like a covers album.

"It was about getting a collection of songs that when we finished would be a complete set of work that would play alongside each other and would sound like they were coming from one band, one singer," he explained. "For me, the challenge really was to remove those original versions from my mind and be able to perform the songs. ...I wanted the album to play out like it was a performance from start to finish that would take you, the listener, on a journey of a song."
