Ну с Живым Дебютом "Ghosts Again"!
Видно скованы, ну ничего, Precious тоже так начинали, обкатают.
Ура! Начало положено! Звук странно отстроен. Вокал впереди, а инструменты где-то вдали.
I realised my mortality, says Depeche Mode's Martin Gore
The band Depeche Mode, after Andy Fletcher's death performing as the duo Martin Gore and David Gahan, is planning a new album Memento Mori and a tour of the same name next year, which also includes Prague. In an interview, keyboardist and composer Martin Gore revealed the circumstances that influenced the concept and title of the album. At a time when most promotional activities for new albums, concerts, and even films or TV series are done through online "press conferences" via zoom, meet and similar platforms, Depeche Mode are sympathetically old-world.
They bring journalists to Berlin, hold a press conference and are available for separate interviews the day after. Berlin is a logical choice in their case, the city has a special magic for musicians that has enchanted the likes of David Bowie and U2. Depeche Mode themselves worked here on the Black Celebration album, which also has a completely unique, specific atmosphere.
The genius loci also worked in the case of the journey to Martin Gore. The autumn sunny Berlin allowed no other option than to walk from the station to the hotel where the interviews took place, to enjoy every now and then and to listen to old and newer "depeche" songs as a soundtrack. Or just play them in your head.
The idyll of sitting by the town's pond was interrupted by a text message with instructions to arrive half an hour early as we needed to test ourselves. Picking his nose in the seclusion of the hotel lobby, the journalist thought nervously about what might happen if two commas appeared on the test. Goodbye, Berlin, goodbye, vidino to sitting with half of the now sadly iconic duo?
Positive mood. It turned out well - it was negative. A few necessary formalities and then, "Take the elevator to the second floor, there go in front of room 232 (too bad it's not 101, that's the name of the band's live album, it would have been stylish - author's note) and there a colleague will pick you up. You'll recognize her easily, she has purple hair."
Apart from the distinctive colour on her hair, she had a decent haircut and said "ten minutes, not a minute more, I'll show you on my fingers that you have three, two, one minutes left". Just like before a rocket launch, my mind still flashed, but by then she was leading me to the door, behind which sat a shyly smiling Mr. Gore. Time is ticking, and as they sing in an old Depeche Mode hit song, Everything Counts. Everything Counts...
Memento Mori, or Remember Death, is a rather depressing and gloomy title, almost like a metal record. What was the reason you chose it? Several of the new songs touch on death in some way, so we found it very apt, I admit I didn't know this Latin phrase before, but when I was telling a friend of mine what our new songs were about, he came up with this saying. I thought it was a great title for the record.
Speaking of death, of course we can't fail to mention the recent passing of Andy Fletcher. In connection with him, the title of the forthcoming album takes on an additional, though of course unintended, meaning. This is unfortunately true, even though we had the whole concept of the album, including the title, figured out before Andy died. It was a huge shock for us, you can probably understand that. Andy was looking forward to working on the record. However, his passing made us realise that we definitely had to name it that. For us this saying symbolizes above all to appreciate life and to live it to the fullest.
Has the sound of the new songs changed in any way since Andy Fletcher's death? Dave (Gahan - singer - ed.) said it did. That when he sings them, he suddenly finds more and more possible interpretations in the lyrics.
Did Dave Gahan get involved in the creation of new songs again, or are you the sole author? Dave has been involved in a few lyrics.
Can the new material be compared to an older Depeche Mode record? It's hard to say, it's hard for me as a writer to judge. I'm mainly interested in making sure that we ourselves are happy with the songs, and of course we're also curious to see what the fans have to say about them. Yesterday we were playing snippets of the new songs and I heard that they have already been leaked on the internet, where they have been well received. So I feel that the record is a success.
Can you reveal something about the tour that's coming up?
It's a bit strange to make an announcement about a tour that you don't really know much about yourself. We haven't even really started talking about what the setlist will look like. We're working with Anton Corbijn, who's going to make a concert film with us. But right now we don't really know anything concrete.
You released a solo EP The Third Chimpanzee last year, do you plan to continue your solo career?
Obviously I'm going to be very busy with Depeche Mode in the next few months, but once we're done touring I think I'll get back into some solo work.
Stop, not another word.
A smiling Martin Gore gets up, thanks for his time, says goodbye. I hang around in the corridor for a while, hoping to catch a glimpse of David Gahan, but to no avail. We exchange impressions with my colleagues who had been "assigned" the iconic voice of Depeche Mode, he was said to be equally welcoming and friendly.
He was not fazed even by the demonstrably stupid question "How does it feel to be David Gahan?", to which he reportedly replied with stoic calmness, "Well, yes, you're right, the weather is very nice in Berlin today..."
The sun was shining even as we left the hotel, yet dusk was slowly creeping into the streets. Like a forthcoming album with a title that foreshadowed a tragic event in the band with terrifying fatality. I believe that Fletch's loss has brought them together and that the album, like the tour, will be worth it.
