Depeche Mode by Anton Corbijn

The official illustrated history of Depeche Mode by Anton Corbijn

In 1981, Anton Corbijn first formally photographed DM in London and Basildon, Essex, for an NME cover. In the foreground was Dave, and the rest of the band were behind him, smiling in sharp focus.

According to Anton, the band was - at the time - "too poppy" for his taste.

In 1986, Anton came on board to do the "A Question Of Time" music video. After the music video, he became the band's de facto creative director. Since 1986, Anton has crafted all Depeche Mode photography, most of the videos, album graphics, and set designs.

This Collector's Edition book features over 500 photographs from Anton's extensive archives, some never seen before, including formal and informal portraits from places such as Madrid, Hamburg, the California desert, Prague, and Marrakech. Along with candid shots and live shots from all the tours since 1988, there are sketches and designs for stage sets and album covers, with Anton's handwritten captions throughout the book.

Created with the full collaboration of the band, who also share some insights on
working with Corbijn, "Depeche Mode by Anton Corbijn" shows how Anton's original and unforgettable visuals helped shape the band's enduring popularity.

Depeche Mode "DM - AC" collector's book by Anton Corbijn. out 22/10/2020

Since 1986, Dutch master Anton Corbijn’s timeless and brooding aesthetic has cemented Depeche Mode’s reputation as effortlessly cool and cutting edge. With over 500 photographs from Corbijn’s personal archives, some never seen before, as well as stage set designs, sketches, album covers, and personal observations from Corbijn, this volume visually amplifies his stunning impact on the world’s biggest cult band.

Collector’s Edition (No. 201–1,986), each signed by Anton Corbijn and Depeche Mode.
Hardcover in clamshell box, 31.5 x 44 cm, 5.86 kg, 512 pages

“Anton was able to give the DM sound, that we were beginning to create, a visual identity.” —Dave Gahan

“We were big fans of Anton’s art before we worked with him and after the amazing results we saw from the first photo sessions and videos, we had no reason to doubt his ideas.” —Martin Gore

“We finally nabbed him in ’86 and that led to the video for ‘A Question of Time’ in LA. The rest is history.” —Andrew Fletcher

In 1981 Anton Corbijn first formally photographed synth teen idols Depeche Mode in London and Basildon, Essex, for an NME cover; in the foreground the blurred singer Dave Gahan, the rest of the band standing behind him smiling in sharp focus. According to Corbijn, the band was, at the time, “too poppy” for his taste. Fast-forward five years and Depeche Mode were transforming their sound and looking towards something more edgy and brooding. Corbijn came on board to do one video and became the band’s de facto creative director, and since 1986 he has crafted all their photography, most of the videos, album graphics, and set designs. Depeche Mode by Anton Corbijn is a detailed illustrated history of how Corbijn’s timeless visuals and epic but honest aesthetic have helped cement Depeche Mode’s reputation as the biggest cult band in the world.

This Collector’s Edition features over 500 photographs from Corbijn’s extensive archives, some never seen before, including formal and informal portraits from places such as Madrid, Hamburg, the California desert, Prague, and Marrakech (many taken during the making of iconic videos such as “Enjoy the Silence” and “Personal Jesus”); a multitude of off-the-cuff, candid images; and stunning live shots from all their tours since 1988. In addition to the photographs, there are sketches and designs for stage sets and album covers, Corbijn’s handwritten captions throughout the book, placing the reader right in the middle of the shoot, and an extended interview with the Dutch master.

Created with the full collaboration of the band, who also share some insights on working with Corbijn, Depeche Mode by Anton Corbijn trumpets how one man’s original and unforgettable visuals helped shape the band’s enduring popularity. Reflecting on his expanded role in Depeche, Corbijn recalls in the book’s introduction: “A lot of it came down to me, and I wanted it to be right for them. I wanted to think for them. To be great for them.” This book is a testament to the depth and breadth of that greatness, a celebration of one of the most creative and enduring collaborations in rock history.

Collector’s Edition (No. 201–1,986), each signed by Anton Corbijn, Dave Gahan, Martin Gore, and Andrew “Fletch” Fletcher.

Also available as two Art Editions of 100 copies each, with alternative photographic prints signed by Anton Corbijn.
