Next week, Mute will release STUMM433, a new box set which forms part of the label's 40th anniversary celebrations. Ahead of its release, and following on from Daniel Miller's contribution to the release as The Normal, the label has now shared Nitzer Ebb's addition to the set. You can check it out above.

The release sees more than 50 Mute-affiliated artists from the past up to the present offering their own takes on John Cage's '4.33'. Each artist has also created a visual to accompany their performance. Nitzer Ebb's above sees the pair standing silently in front of a set-up of instruments and, in-keeping with Cage's piece, not playing them.

Amongst the other acts to have contributed their own interpretations of '4'33"' are Goldfrapp, Depeche Mode, Erasure, Liars, Yann Tiersen and Irmin Schmidt. You can find out more about the release, which is due out on October 4

MUTE celebrate the release of their long awaited box set, STUMM433, out on 25 October 2019. The event will see Daniel Miller and Simon Fisher Turner in conversation and a playback of selections from the 5-piece box set

STUMM433 is the latest in the MUTE 4.0 (1978 > TOMORROW) series: a box set collating an unprecedented selection of Mute artists past, present and future, out on vinyl as a very limited box set edition of 433, signed by Daniel Miller as well as CD (both 5-piece collections, available from Mute Bank), and to download and stream.

STUMM433 features a huge array – over 50 - of Mute artists including Yann Tiersen, The Normal, Goldfrapp, Laibach, Depeche Mode, Liars, Silicon Teens, Erasure, K Á R Y Y N, Irmin Schmidt and many more, all presenting their own interpretation of one piece of music: John Cage’s game changing composition, 4’33”.

Simon Fisher Turner

From child actor to teenage pop idol, from self-confessed “extreme sound freak” to acclaimed solo recording artist, Simon Fisher’s career has been nothing if not varied. His early acting credits included film and TV roles from ‘Black Beauty’ to ‘The Big Sleep’ (re-made with Robert Mitchum). At the same time he was fronting various 70s pop acts, and at the age of 17 was signed to Jonathan King’s UK Records, releasing his first solo album in 1969. After that precocious start, Simon followed an often eccentric, sometimes outlandish musical path. He operated on the fringes of punk; performed briely with The The; became Musician in Residence at the ICA in 1980; released two albums as one half of a fictional French female duo know as Deux Filles. But through all this Simon was developing a deep and abiding interest in the stuff of sound, accumulating a vast library of collected sounds from daily life. It is this interest which now forms the basis of his improvisatory, eclectic approach to music making, and is manifest on his most recent solo albums on the Mute label (his discography comprises some 30 solo albums to date). From trite pop to extreme sound-freakery, the mature SFT (as he now styles himself) has arrived at a mesmeric originality. Simon’s life as a film composer stems from his association with Derek Jarman in the 1980s and 1990s. His scoring credits for Jarman included ‘Caravaggio’, ‘The Last of England’, ‘The Garden’ and ‘Edward II’. His final film for Jarman was the powerful, poignant ‘Blue’, where a soundscape recorded by Simon at Eno’s country house, together with Jarman’s AIDs-inspired spoken words, stood in for visuals - only a blue screen was projected. The film won a Michael Powell Award. His work with films has continued unabated since Jarman’s death. simonfisherturner.com

Daniel Miller

Daniel Miller founded Mute, the influential independent British label, in 1978 with the release of his own 7” single, The Normal's ‘Warm Leatherette’ / ‘TVOD’.

Since then, Daniel Miller has expanded Mute to include publishing and management, with offices in London and New York. Running parallel to its strong commercial track record, the guiding spirit behind Mute has always been one of artistic freedom and creative adventure. Mute has nurtured and worked with artists as diverse as Depeche Mode, Laibach, New Order, Liars, Goldfrapp, Erasure, Swans, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Throbbing Gristle and Can.

Daniel Miller has produced some of the most groundbreaking releases and is a well respected and sought after techno DJ, playing regularly worldwide. Miller is a keen street photographer and has given a number of talks relating street photography to modular synths.
