Personal Jesus, Barrel Of A Gun, Precious

ANDY FLETCHER IN ROMANIA
First of all I want to ask you what are your feelings about Romania, you’ve been here in the past and you keep coming back? Do you like it here?
Yes, I like it a lot. I also have Romanian friends, good friends, and I always enjoy my trips when I go there.
Do you also like the Romanian audience?
Yes, it's perfect.
Why did you start playing music as a DJ? Do you enjoy more the clubbing scene than the stadium size concerts that you’ve been playing with Depeche Mode?
Well, with Depeche Mode everything is so big, you know. We have lots of people around us all the time. As a DJ I have only have a couple of people that transport the instruments, like three or four people.
But what about the differences between the audiences? Do you feel the audience from the clubs more closer to you?
Of course, the place is much smaller, so even physically they are closer. But, you know, DJ-ing is more of a hobby for me. With Depeche Mode it's different because we are so popular. But early on in our carrier we played in small clubs, so we're used to it.
When did your interest for DJ-ing begin?
Well, it started seven years ago when I hooked out with a band called Client and I was DJ-ing with them on the stage every time I got free time. Obviously, most of the time I was working with Depeche Mode. Now it's good that I have a little time to enjoy the DJ-ing. What kind of music do you play as a DJ?
I'm playing a mixture, I don't play just one style. I play some house, some electro, some rock and I hope that the audience will have a good time. If they don't I'll play some brand new Depeche Mode remixes we'll be releasing on our remix album which comes out in a couple of months. I think they'll be exciting for the audience.
Do you have some favorite DJs?
Not really. It's strange, for me DJ-ing is a hobby and I don't think I'm an amazing DJ, but I think I play good music.
What about Depeche Mode? How’s that going, any exciting plans for the future with the guys? You said something about a remix album.
Yeah, for the moment Martin is finishing the project (remix album) with Vince Clarke which is sort of a dance, minimal, techno record. And hopefully in a couple of months he'll be back and start writing and we'll try to make another album.
You also had your own label and a restaurant? How’s that going?
Well, the label... I stopped working with anyone at the moment. And the restaurant, I sold it a few years ago. But I try to open a new place at the moment.
A restaurant, a pub, a club?
A restaurant, a pub, a place were they serve food. The important thing is that the people feel comfortable there.
From where do you get your inspiration when DJ-ing?
I try to play some sort of history, maybe, of what might inspired Depeche Mode, music around the band. And, you know, we played some different styles and that's what I try to express with the music that I play as a DJ.
How does an ordinary day from your life look like?
At the moment I have to practice on my DJ-ing for when I come to Bucharest, I do that most of the day. But sometimes I just go in a pub and try to relax.
But you said that DJ-ing is a hobby, so that must be relaxing.
Yeah, but it gets frustrating sometimes. But, yeah, most of the times I get good vibes. Getting back to Depeche Mode, what’s your favorite period or best memories with the band?
There are lots of memories, we are very lucky, you know, after 30 years we are still very popular. It really is a dream come true. We started very young, we were teenagers. The early days were a fantastic experience. Seeing our songs in the tops, our music on the radio, the very first time when we broke into America and a lot of good memories from lots of places around the world where we played: Paris, New York... We had an incredible carrier.
In the end could you say some words for the Andy Fletcher and Depeche Mode Romanian fans?
Hi, this is Andy Fletcher from Depeche Mode giving the Romanian fans a big "Hello!" and I'm looking forward to see you when I come over.
Thanks and we're also looking forward for your gig! See you in Bucharest.
